COURSE OVERVIEW

The Garment Construction short course provides the fundamental components of garment construction in both the principles of basic garment construction theory & practical aspects. It offers the essential skills necessary to construct the basic garments. In class practical exercises will demonstrate the translation of patterns into garments including samples of various construction details.

25 years of experience within the Fashion industry. This course has been developed by expert facilitators with an in-dept. subject knowledge. Students will be lectured by highly skilled Lecturers who are specialists in their fields. Anybody with a keen and interest in how clothes are made and enjoys working with their hands and might want to get into the fashion industry or prepare themselves for further studies in higher education. Prospective students who are interested in gaining an understanding of the fundamentals of constructing clothing and want to develop their skills in this regard. For someone who wants to get started in the fashion industry or prepare themselves for further studies in Higher Education.

Students who are 16 years of age and above qualify to enrol in our short courses. A basic understanding of how to operate a sewing machine and construct a garment would be useful but this will be extensively demonstrated by your lecturer during the course.

Students have access to the campus facilities and may engage with their lecturers for assistance. Students can also receive guidance from the Registrar. Tutorials & online resources.

This course runs in two cycles for the year. Over a period of 16 weeks per cycle, with classes taking place on Saturdays, between 9am- 3pm. This course takes place in contact on either the Johannesburg or Pretoria campus.

COURSE CURRICULUM

  •  Use of equipment including machine operation and troubleshooting 

  • Fabric, cutting and sewing fundamentals

  • Basic seams, hems and finishes

  •  Gathers and pleats 

  •  Waistband, collar and cuff attachment 

  •  Insert and patch pockets 

  •  Zip and button closures

  • Set-in sleeves 

  • Order of construction analysis
